Are CD8 and CD8α the same indicator?

Are CD8 and CD8α the same indicator?

CD8 and CD8α are marker molecules commonly used in immunology to characterize and identify specific cell types in the immune system.CD8 is a cell-surface receptor molecule expressed predominantly in cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and helper T-cell subsets. It plays an important role in mediating the recognition and killing of infected cells by CTLs by binding to MHC-I molecules. Therefore, CD8 is commonly used as an indicator for labeling CTLs. In contrast, CD8α is an isoform of the CD8 complex, which is the α-chain of CD8.The CD8 complex consists of two subunits (α-chain and β-chain), of which the CD8α chain plays an important role in the formation of the complex. The CD8α chain is not only involved in binding to MHC-I molecules, but also can regulate the activity of CTLs by interacting with other signaling molecules. Therefore, the expression level and functional status of CD8α play a key role in the activation and effects of CTLs.
